Queen Victoria Seamen’s Rest Christmas Carol Service

You are warmly invited to the Queen Victoria Seamen’s Rest Xmas Carol Service on Tuesday 12th December at 7pm. Service starts at 7.30pm.

The Queen Victoria Seamen’s Rest (aka QVSR or the Queen Vic) on East India Dock Road has been serving Tower Hamlets for more years than most – next year marks its 175th anniversary.

175 years of outstanding service

Originally established in 1843 to provide essential accommodation and support for the seafarers of London’s dock it has continued to evolve and thrive and now provides accommodation to ex-servicemen and the homeless as well as seafarers.

Active and retired seafarers are always given priority with regards to accommodation but any men in need of a safe place to stay can be referred.

Christmas carols

This year there is an open invitation to the Queen Victoria Seamen’s Rest Xmas Carol Service that will include performances from the QVSR Band and Choir and the Salvation Army Timbrels.

If you have never witnessed the Timbrels in action then you should! A quintessentially British custom.

Although the QVSR has moved with the times it still provides essential services for seafarers moving visiting the UK and still acts as an agent for Shipwrecked Mariners.

Bigger on the inside than the outside

Recent years have seen steady improvements to the Tardis-like QVSR building’s accomodation with larger, more comfortable and modern bedrooms of a very high quality each with its own en-suite toilet and shower facility.

Apparently the Wapping Mole occasionally stays at the QVSR when he has spent too many hours burrowing at the nearby Town Hall and his poor little paws are too tired to carry him home to his Wapping burrow.

QVSR is part of the Centres for Seafarers, a not for profit charity company that originally was a partnership of the three international Christian Mission Societies: The Apostleship of the Sea, The Sailors Society and The Mission to Seafarers. In 2014 the partnership widened to include Queen Victoria Seamen’s Rest – The Seamen’s Mission of the Methodist Church.
