Local charity worker honoured by Queen with MBE

Lorraine Dooley has been made a Member of the British Empire in the Queen’s 90th Birthday Honours list for her many years work running the Tower Hamlets Opportunity Group (THOG) in Limehouse.

LW can attest to the energy and commitment of Mrs Dooley MBE after a recent visit to THOG which was founded in 1986.

Mrs Lorraine Dooley MBE of Tower Hamlets Opportunity Group

Well done Lorraine!

Despite savage cuts THOG, which is run from the Around Poplar Sure Start Children’s Centre in Three Colt Street, the playgroup vibrates with the energy of children, carers and volunteers.

THOG provides a service across Tower Hamlets for children between two and five years. Their criteria is that 51% of their children have a disability/additional needs.

Generation after generation

Because of the longevity and quality of services provided by Lorraine and her team THOG finds that it now welcomes parents to the service who were themselves once children in the playgroup.

It was too early in the morning to contact Lorraine for comment on her award but we have a feeling it would be something typically self effacing along the lines of the award being for the staff and volunteers, parents, carers and children who have helped make Tower Hamlets Opportunity Group what it is today.

As mentioned above THOG has lost a huge amount of funding due to cuts across the borough so if you have some spare cash and would like to help THOG continue its amazing work please click this link and make a donation.

Large banks and multinationals based in Canary Wharf are especially invited to dig deep. (That was a hint.)

The borough needs exceptional people like Lorraine running fundamental services like Tower Hamlets Opportunity Group that make a massive difference to our community.
