Resurrection of Wapping’s Tobacco Dock continues

The resurrection of Tobacco Dock, Wapping’s much-loved Grade 1 listed warehouse, continues apace with the news that it is to become a centre for start-up businesses with up to 600 desks, ‘The Dock’.

The Dock is being promoted as ‘Europe’s largest largest and most desirable startup members club’. Sounds right posh.

The first use of the new co-working space will be by MassChallenge UK which ‘connects high-impact early stage startups with mentors, partners & investors and free support during a 4-month accelerator period.’

Any startup can enter MassChallenge, in any industry, from anywhere in the world. Applications are open from 11 February through 1 April and the accelerator programme itself will take place from June through October. Entrepreneurs can apply here:

Business accelerator programme

Series-A funding is a start-up company’s first significant round of venture capital investment. The name refers to the class of preferred stock sold to investors in exchange for their investment. So now you know.

When The Dock is completed in the Autumn it will be home to an estimated 120+ start-up and Series A funded businesses occupying in excess of 600 desks and over 40,000 sq ft of office, meeting, collaboration and socialising spaces in the West Vaults of Tobacco Dock.

Of this, MassChallenge will occupy up to 150 desks for its accelerator programme participants, UK team, programme alumni and supporters.

MassChallenge UK partners include: RBS, Unilever, Visa Europe, Satellite Application Catapult, Digital Catapult, Hult International Business School, EMC, Media City UK, The Manchester Growth Company, GCHQ, The Landing, Taylor Wessing, The BIG Partnership, UK Business Angels Association, and Tobacco Dock.

London’s most iconic co-working space

Patrick Donovan, the Managing Director of Tobacco Dock, said: “MassChallenge is set to grow into Europe’s most successful and high profile business accelerator programme. The Dock is supporting MassChallenge because we believe that the program will be a huge success in the UK and Europe and will be the perfect partner in developing our vision for The Dock as London’s most iconic co-working space.”

Massive business potential for Wapping

Even if you have no interest in undertaking your own start-up it is worth considering the potential value to businesses in Wapping of 600 desks being used by business people who will need a whole range of services.

It is also very likely that The Dock will absorb the overspill of tech start-ups from Shoreditch and Silicon Roundabout.

One interesting aspect of The Dock is that there must be some very good internet connectivity into Tobacco Dock – quite possibly tapping off the new fibre cabinet outside 21 Wapping Lane.

I wonder if the rest of us could get some of that high-speed broadband too?
