About

Hello! Love Wapping? What’s this about then?

mark-baynes-geeseMy name is Mark Baynes and I have been living in Wapping since 2010.

I live on the Green Bank Estate which is right in the middle of Wapping.

As you can see from the photo (left) I enjoy keeping an eye on the local wildlife.

You can find out a bit more about why Love Wapping exists on the Hyperlocal Voices site run by Damian Radcliffe and  in The Value of UK Hyperlocal Community News by the School of Journalism, Media, and Cultural Studies at Cardiff University.

Almost a secret but not quite

Wapping is a great place, probably because it is slightly off the beaten track. Almost a secret, but not quite. Once the centre of the London docks that were the heart of the British Empire it is not as busy now but still fascinating.

Viking, Romans, Royal Marines – welcome one and all

In the summer of 2012 Wapping was lucky enough to be hosts to large numbers of the UK Armed Forces who were working on the London 2012 Olympics. But then we have had Vikings and Romans here in the past so it was no big deal.

Our local bridge

Our local bridge is called Tower Bridge. It’s an icon of the United Kingdom and probably the most famous bridge in the world, but to us it is ‘our local bridge’.

Wapping is part of the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. And it just so happens that the Tower in question is the Tower of London, just down the road.

And of course Wapping would not be what it is without the River Thames which forms the southern border.

So with all this history on our doorstep it’s not surprising that those of us lucky enough to live here like to look after Wapping.

Reasons to Love Wapping

Which is the reason for Love Wapping.

Of which more later. You can find out more about Love Wapping on the Aims and Objectives page.
