The Department for Education (DfE) has banned Mohammed Mizanur Rahman, formerly proprietor of the unregistered Siddeeq Academy in Hessel Street, Shadwell from managing any form of school or academy in the UK.
Damian Hinds, the Secretary of State for Education, found that Mohammed Mizanur Rahman was unsuitable to take part in the management of an independent school (including an academy or free school) under section 128 of the Education and Skills Act 2008. The decision also effectively disqualifies the person from being a governor at a maintained school.
Mizanur Rahman was the proprietor of the Siddeeq Academy when it was raided by Counter Terrorism police officers in 2014.
Links to Al-Muhajiroun
Siddeeq Academy was linked to banned Salafi jihadi group Al-Muhajiroun and had applied for planning permission for the premises in Hessel Street, just west of Cannon Street Road, prior to the raid.
The DfE prohibition notice was only published on 14th February 2019 despite the notice direction being made on 21st January 2019.
Mizanur Rahman has previously been found guilty of inciting racial hatred contrary to Section 18 of the Public Order Act 1986 in 2006, solicitation to murder contrary to Section 4 of the Offences Against the Person Act 1861 in 2007, and inviting support for a proscribed organisation contrary to Section 12 of the Terrorism Act in 2016.
A sharp-eyed and ever vigilant Love Wapping reader brought the notice to the attention of Moley after spotting it. Thanks!
Community Events and Community Chest grants
Oddly enough Moley is more than a little familiar with the activities in Hessel Street as he paid a visit to the premises after the raids in 2014 and undertook some basic research – which is how we created the sketch plan and photographs you can see above.
Moley found details of grants made by the London Borough of Tower Hamlets to organisations in Hessel Street via Mayor Lutfur Rahman’s special ‘Community Events’ and ‘Community Chest’ grants.
Full details on these grants and our investigation in a future LW post.
