Tower Hamlets council key roles and committee appointments announced (yawn)

By on May 26, 2018 in Council meetings

The new Labour administration of the London Borough of Tower Hamlets has confirmed the names of the councillors who have been appointed to the key roles and committees at its recent Annual General Meeting (AGM) which also saw the increases in Special Responsibility Allowances (SRA) approved.

Which was hardly a shock.

The Toronto City Council Fun and Games Committee took their work very seriously (photo circa 1911)

The photo is without doubt the most interesting part of this post so if you want to go and do something interesting we will not take it personally.

However if you are as sad as the staff of our newly formed Committee Committee (Not Very Interesting News Committee) you will realise that who has been appointed to what post can reveal insights into those who are in favour.

Not that our Committee knows to be honest.

The key players

  • Executive Mayor of Tower Hamlets – John Biggs.
  • Statutory Deputy Mayor and Cabinet Member for Housing, Cllr. Sirajul Islam.
  • Deputy Mayor and Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Air Quality, Cllr. Rachel Blake.
  • Deputy Mayor and Cabinet Member for Community Safety and Equalities, Cllr. Asma Begum.
  • Cabinet Member for Children, Schools and Young People, Cllr. Danny Hassell.
  • Cabinet Member for Culture, Arts and Brexit, Cllr. Amina Ali.
  • Cabinet Member for Environment, Cllr. David Edgar.
  • Cabinet Member for Work and Economic Growth, Cllr. Motin Uz-Zaman.
  • Cabinet Member for Resources and the Voluntary Sector, Cllr. Candida Ronald.
  • Cabinet Member for Adults, Health and Wellbeing, Cllr. Denise Jones.

Interesting to note that Cllr. John Pierce has not made it to the top table for some reason although he is Chair of the  Strategic Development Committee.

Good people, safe hands

It is good to see that Children, Schools and Young People are in the safe hands of Cllr. Danny Hassell and the same is true of Adults, Health and Wellbeing which is looked after by Wapping’s very own Cllr. Denise Jones, who is probably the most experienced of any Labour councillor.

Abdal’s rocket (and we don’t mean salad)

Another Wapping councillor and close associate of Mayor Biggs, Abdal Ullah, has rocketed back into elected office after a brief spell doing his own thing and has been given the plum job of Chair of the Oversight and Scrutiny Committee or O&S as it is known.

O&S does just what it says on its tin – it is responsible for keeping an eye on what the Council gets up to and scrutinising any important or controversial decisions.

As such it will, in turn, be subject to an extremely high level of scrutiny by the media given the recent history of corruption, cronyism, bribery, dodgy grant giving and lots of other naughty things that have happened in Tower Hamlets. It is the job of O&S to spot anything untoward.

The abject failure of the O&S Committee to do so during the Rahman administration speaks volumes of how the council has not functioned in past years.

Marking their own homework

Critics argue that having a Labour chair of O&S which is ‘marking the councils homework’ is not good practise and that a member of the (much reduced) opposition should have been appointed to this role in the interests of open and transparent government.

Opposition members – all three of them – are members of various committees. Conservative councillor Andrew Wood is a member of O&S, Development, Grants and Pensions and his colleague Peter Golds is a member of O&S, Audit, General Purposes, Health, Housing and Licensing.

Last but by no means least Cllr. Rabina Khan (Shadwell, PATH) is a member of the Strategic Development Committee.
