Latest elections policing report published by Tower Hamlets police

An update on arrests and reported crime relating to the 3rd May elections have been released by Tower Hamlets police and the Met’s Special Enquiry Team (SET).

There is no significant increase from the previous report but there is the addition of the assault on an Aspire candidate in Wapping at Reardon House.

This is the first time an allegation of violent crime relating to the election campaign has been listed.

As of 1000 hours on Thursday 19th April 2018 the Special Enquiry Team (SET) have received a total of 55 notifications/allegations in relation to the Local and Mayoral Elections on 3rd May 2018..

Of these 45 relate specifically to London Borough of Tower Hamlets..

  • Three of the Tower Hamlets allegations were reported by members of the public..
  • 31 (69%) of Tower Hamlets allegations have been reported by Councillors or Candidates from LBTH..
  • 22 of the Tower Hamlets allegations relate to the same offence, i.e. Sec 106 RPA False Statement as to Candidate..
  • 16 Allegations are from comments persons have made on social media..
  • 12 Allegations are now closed as no evidence of a criminal offence..
  • Three allegations were referred to the CPS for Early investigative Advice. CPS advised no criminal offences had been committed in all 3 cases..
  • Words of Advice will be provided to 2 candidates re their behaviour, conduct and considerations to be made when posting information on social media sites..
