Mayor Biggs leads radical LGBT planning approach to Joiners Arms

By on August 4, 2017 in Planning

Tower Hamlets council has made history by being the first London borough to make the sexual orientation of a venue’s customers a condition of planning approval for the Joiners Arms site.

The Joiners’ Arms is a legendary LGBT pub and nightclub on Hackney Road once described as “Britain’s trendiest gay dive”.

Closed in 2015 the old building is due to be demolished to make way for redevelopment as part of a relaunch led by its former owners.

The radical approach to planning is encapsulated in the condition that the location will “remain a lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender-focused venue for a minimum of 12 years”.

Mayor John Biggs expressed his satisfaction that Tower Hamlets Council is “leading the way in using innovative ways to protect spaces such as the Joiners Arms site.”
