Wapping to be locked-in for two consecutive weekends

By on July 6, 2017 in Events

Due to sporting events on The Highway on Sunday 23rd July and Sunday 30th July residents of Wapping will be locked-in on both weekends with little means of escape.

Unless they have access to boats. Like the MPS Marine Unit (hint).

The London Triathlon takes place on Sunday 23rd July and the Prudential RideLondon cycling event is held on Sunday 30th July.

Both events mean that, as in previous years, The Highway will be closed so local residents will have no vehicle access in or out of Wapping and there will be limited pedestrian access.

The nearest pedestrian access to central Wapping is at Glamis Road. Yet again the elderly and infirm are penalised.

Wapping Overground will be open but this is of no use to parents with prams, the elderly or the disabled due to the steps down to the platform.

LW asked Tower Hamlets Council for a statement on this issue but had not received a reply at the time of publication.

LW Comment

Both events are great fun to participate in and watch but Wapping being locked in for two consecutive weekends is a bit much.

Well that’s just great. Got an expensive weekend in London planned, driving up and staying with my friends who live in Wapping….. looks like we’ll be staying at home and loosing out a lot. One of my only social events of the year, disabled and depressed. Thanks Wapping.
