At the start of writing this 273,383 UK citizens had signed an online petition to prevent US President Donald Trump from making a State Visit to the United Kingdom.
At the start of this sentence 274,822 people had signed. Sorry, 276,211. Anyway the people of the East End of London have a proud tradition of stopping fascists. The Battle of Cable Street was the most famous occasion but since then various other right-wing thugs have tried to march in Tower Hamlets and they have all been stopped.
Word is that President Donald Trump is looking forward to a State Visit to the UK. So let’s try and ruin his day by signing the petition. (278,881 signatures).
If that fails then at least Trump will know the strength of feeling against his despicable ban on Muslims from entering the USA.
And if he should have the cheek to set foot on UK soil again LW is of the opinion that we should all get out on the streets and block his motorcade. (282,309 signatures)
Yes the US President has a big car. Yes his bodyguards have silly haircuts. Yes he thinks Yerp is a small Soviet state somewhere. But we have to make a stand somewhere. (282,731 signatures.)
Read and remember the words of Pastor Martin Niemöller (1892–1984) below about the cowardice of German intellectuals following the Nazis’ rise to power and the mass murder of groups such as the socialists, the gypsies, the Jews, the Trade Unionists.
“First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Socialist.
Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.”
Melodramatic? No. This line could now, in January 2017, be added to the Pastor’s words:
“Then they came for the Muslims, and I did not speak out – Because I was not a Muslim.”
