Tower Hamlets First Councillor Shahed Ali pleads guilty to housing fraud

By on September 26, 2016 in News, Tower Hamlets council

Cllr. Shahed Ali (Tower Hamlets First Or Whatever They Are On Tuesdays, Whitechapel) appeared at Snaresbrook Crown Court today in relation to one count of housing fraud under Section 3 of the Fraud Act 2006 (fraud by failing to disclose information).

It seems Cllr. Ali failed to notify the council of a change in his circumstances between the date that he completed a housing application form and the date that he accepted a council tenancy.

Oops.

His sentencing will take place on Thursday, October 27.

Section 80 of the Local Government Act 1972 states that a person shall be disqualified as an elected member if he/she has within five years before the day of election or since his election been convicted in the United Kingdom, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man of any offence and has had passed on him a sentence of imprisonment (whether suspended or not) for a period of not less than three months without the option of a fine.

So if Cllr. Ali gets more than three months it looks like we will only have 16 more corruptly elected Tower Hamlets councillors to get rid of.

Official statement from Tower Hamlets Labour Party.

“Ripping off residents”

In an official statement by Tower Hamlets Labour Party the Mayor of Tower Hamlets John Biggs said:

“Shahed Ali’s conviction should send a tough and clear message to anyone who believes they can get away with housing fraud.

“For an elected representative this is particularly shameful behaviour and a scandalous breach of trust. After the criminality and corruption of the previous administration, of which Shahed Ali was a part, it is I suppose of little surprise that he would intentionally rip-off the residents he was elected to serve.

“In my view anyone who tries to defraud taxpayers has no place sitting on the Council, if he had any integrity whatsoever he would apologise and resign. Indeed he should have done that months ago.

LW Comment

Keen eyed LW readers will remember the wise words of Cllr. Shahed Ali in defence of the corrupt ex-Mayor against allegations of – horror! – allegations of electoral fraud! DISGUSTING!

“In the Rahman’s defence, Shahed Ali, the Independent councillor for Whitechapel suggested that one source of the allegations, local blog Love Wapping, “is nothing near to a national newspaper” and that people should not believe what they read.”

We shall refrain from further comment but direct both our readers to the daguerreotype of the LW newsroom taken only this morning. Make your own minds up.
