DCLG Commissioners clamp down on Tower Hamlets grants

The Commissioners sent in by Eric Pickles to sort out Tower Hamlets council have begun to publish the results of their work on the Main Stream Grants (MSG) shambles. Have a look at the bar chart below to see which organisation's projects have been stopped. Grant funding with 'red' status are the ones in - you guessed it - red! (Editor's note: more a fetching shade of salmon pink to be honest...) Click on the blue button to sort by the value of the original grant award. (Geek note: This chart may not work in older browsers. Sorry!)

Tower Hamlets Main Stream Grants - 'red' and closed Projects

Notes

On the 17th December 2014 the UK Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) issued a series of directions under the Local Government Act 1999 to the London Borough of Tower Hamlets Council to secure compliance with the Borough's'best value duty'. A key part of this is the administration by the DCL Commissioner's of the Council's Main Stream Grants (MSG) Programme that provides funding to third sector and charity organisations. All existing projects have now been rated on a 'Red Amber Green' (RAG) ranking - think traffic lights. The above chart shows those projects that have either been rated as 'red' and will not be extended or those that have ceased delivery and are now closed and so will not continue but will be subject to a closure audit. The categories have had to be shortened to fit them into the chart. Love Wapping considers these to be accurate and the 'Unknown' category is just that - we have not been able to clearly define the nature of the project from publicly available documentation.

  1. I think the main thing here is now to look at the monitoring procedures within the council and look at either bringing in the police and or civil actions against council employees for either incompetence or corruption.

  2. How much is the council spending on ‘Mother Tongue Bengali’ lessons? And then how much on transaltion servcies for people that cannot speak English? This is crazy, surely the money should be spent on English lessons, and the transaltion services reduced?
