Statement regarding the election petition

The Returning Officer for the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, Mr John Williams, confirmed today that he was served notice of the presentation of an election petition to court on 10th June 2014, regarding the Mayoral elections held on 22nd May 2014.

Mr Williams said, “I cannot comment on the specifics of the election petition that pertain to my role as I am taking legal advice and will be responding as necessary to the court.

However I can say that the measures put in place to manage the May 2014 elections in Tower Hamlets were the toughest available within the limits of the current law and I have worked closely with the Electoral Commission and Metropolitan Police to combat fraud and investigate thoroughly any allegations that were made through our new dedicated reporting procedure.

“84 allegations of unlawful or corrupt practice were passed to the Police, who have confirmed that in most cases no evidence was found to support any further action but that they are currently investigating 8 cases.”
